Eddie Lewis gave a brief smile. It was enough to greet reporters in the locker room when asked about his goal Sunday.
Lewis’ score helped save a point for the Los Angeles Galaxy in a 1-1 draw against the Columbus Crew at The Home Depot Center.
The veteran defender was satisfied with his first goal of the season seconds into stoppage time against the Crew, who finished with 10 men.
He sent a blast from about 30 yards out into the left corner of Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum’s net. The score also kept a Galaxy seven-match unbeaten streak intact.
“It was a good strike. It was set up real nice,” said Lewis. “I just remembered the whole team was inside the box and there was plenty of time (to shoot). Really, the biggest challenge was making sure I didn’t get over anxious and just let it fall in. It was one of those, as soon as they leave your feet you just know right away.”
Lewis’ goal saved a loss and bailed out Tony Sanneh for his mistake, which led to a 1-0 Crew lead in the 70th minute.
Sanneh casually accepted a goal kick at the edge of his own penalty area. He tried sending a soft pass back to Omar Gonzalez across the top of the box. But Crew leading scorer Guillermo Barros Schelotto (five goals) intercepted the pass and raced into the box before sending the ball past Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
“I made a mistake, but luckily for us Eddie had a nice shot to get the point back,” Sanneh said. “I apologized to the team for putting in us that position.”
