Landon Donovan recorded the assist on the USMNT’s lone goal in the 9th minute, but the Mexican team fought back, eventually scoring the game winner in the 82nd minute. After the game, Landon shared his thoughts on the match:
On the game:
“I thought we did a pretty good job of keeping things under control. We know on this field and in these circumstances, they’re always going to have a lot of the ball, but we didn’t feel like they were overly dangerous. We did a good job starting the game well and scoring, and then they made one play at the end that made the difference.”
On Mexico’s first goal:
“[Castro] hits an absolute dream goal. You give that guy a thousand shots like that, he’s not going to score that goal. It was a little unfortunate for us that he scores that goal, and then maybe at the end they get a little lucky bounce in the box. It’s frustrating.”
On playing in Estadio Azteca:
“It’s hard to play here. It wears you out. It’s just exhausting.”
On his emotions on the match:
“I said this week that I didn’t want people to get carried away. This wasn’t a live or die game for us; it was for them. Now, it puts us in a little bit more of a difficult position, but our next game is home with El Salvador, which we expect to win, and away to Trinidad, which we expect to win. We still feel if we win those two games, we’re going to qualify.”
On the USA’s goal:
“It was good. We played well in the opening part of the game and we deserved it, it was a good goal. After that, they put a lot of pressure on us and scored a wonder goal, so it’s unfortunate that we couldn’t get to halftime with the lead.”

Hello Landon im from Mexico, i would just like to know your answer. Even though you might think you are hated here in mexico, you have a lot of fans here, the team i go for here is Club America, because of team having very bad seasons in the past years, a lot of the fans have created a website where we vote for you to come and play for the team, if you were offered a contract would you play in Mexico for this club? My family and i are crazy fans of you, we wish you best wishes and hope that flu isnt anything serious! Hope to meet you some day!! You“re the best!!

Hi Landon,
Do you feel a responsibility in growing soccer in the U.S., and if so, do you feel your open negativity towards Mexico hurt the possible relationship you could have with a young Mexico fan base?

Landon,
As every Mexican at estadio azteca, I was rooting my lungs out for Mexico, I believe that it was a fair result and that the best team on the turf kept the 3 points, however, I must reakon that your fighting spirit, unbreakable heart and iron cold mentality has always inspired me, keep up the good work and hold your chin high, as I see it, Mexico needs great talented opponents such as yourself, for only through intense competition may one thrive towards excellence.
Someday the USA will be a soccer powerhouse, hopefully Mexico will still be around fighting toe to toe.
